MONUMENT AUX MORTS D’ALIGNAN-DU-VENT

This war memorial is the creation of a child of the country: Léon Azéma. Architect born in Alignan-du-Vent in 1888, he died in Épernay on March 1, 1978
The son of winegrowers ruined by phylloxera, Léon Azéma moved to Paris in 1902 and entered the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Seriously wounded in Charleroi at the end of August 1914 and taken prisoner, he remained in captivity for five years. Perhaps that is why he offered his native village his monument to the Dead...
First Grand Prix de Rome in 1921, he was the winner of the international competition for the construction of the Palace of Justice in Cairo. In 1923, he won the competition for the construction of the Douaumont Ossuary in Verdun, which he completed in 1932. In 1936, with Jacques Carlu and Louis-Hippolyte Boileau, he won the competition for the construction of the Palais de Chaillot, on the occasion of the 1937 Universal Exhibition. At the age of 65, he took part in the competition for the Maison de la Radio in Paris.
